In fact, it isn't a stretch to suggest that the album is to the first handful of SY releases what \u003ci\u003eIt's Alive\u003c\/i\u003e is to the first three Ramones LPs – \u003cspan\u003ea feral and liberatory public snapshot of a band's blossoming imperial phase\u003c\/span\u003e. Indeed, \u003ci\u003eHTT\u003c\/i\u003e is the sound of a group at the peak of their powers, presenting new songs alongside a handful of older ones with the kind of wild, cathartic enthusiasm common to rock 'n' roll's most revered live albums.\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003eTaking nothing away from \u003ci\u003eSister\u003c\/i\u003e – inarguably one of indie rock's first true masterpieces – it is reasonable that many fans prefer the live versions heard on \u003ci\u003eHold That Tiger\u003c\/i\u003e to their studio counterparts. On \u003ci\u003eHTT\u003c\/i\u003e, Sonic Youth is a \u003cspan\u003espiky, pummeling and confident force, alternately mammoth and meditative\u003c\/span\u003e. \u003ci\u003eSister\u003c\/i\u003e and its predecessor \u003ci\u003eEVOL\u003c\/i\u003e notably added an airy, dreamlike reverie to the band's turbulent doom-lurch, a stylistic evolution that seems to crystallize on \u003ci\u003eHTT\u003c\/i\u003e. Throughout, \u003cspan\u003eKim Gordon\u003c\/span\u003e's sinewy, sumptuous bass and \u003cspan\u003eSteve Shelley\u003c\/span\u003e's propulsive, tom-heavy percussion provide the bedrock groove for \u003cspan\u003eThurston Moore\u003c\/span\u003e and \u003cspan\u003eLee Ranaldo\u003c\/span\u003e's ferocious barrages of noise-guitar crunch.\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003eBy 1987, the band was confidently articulating their \u003cspan\u003edual lexicon of punk-noir dissonance and supernal, psychedelic sonic calligraphy\u003c\/span\u003e – bending their jagged, streetwise gnarl into balloon animals of dazzling and beautiful songs.
